About the Medical Certificate application fee
Why do I have to pay a fee now when I didn't have to before?
The CAA undertook a funding review as part of its programme to ensure its long term ability to achieve safety objectives, apply good business practice and financial management, and address drivers for change.
The review was intended to make sure that activities to renew the organisation can be maintained.

How much must I pay?
You can expect to pay New Zealand (NZD) $120.75 (GST inclusive where applicable) regardless of whether this is your first application or you are renewing your medical certificate.

What is GST?
GST is a Goods and Services Tax which is applied to most goods and services in New Zealand. GST is added to the price of taxable goods and services at a rate of 15%.
Can I expect a refund?
The Medical Certification Application fee is a non-refundable fee. However, refer to the Terms and Conditions for exceptions.
Is this fee part of the fees that the Medical Examiners charge?
No. The Civil Aviation Medical Certificate Application fee is independent of the costs that you pay to medical examiners or any other health professionals.
What are the payment options?
Paying by Credit Card
Any credit card payments made to the Civil Aviation Authority are governed by New Zealand law. New Zealand courts have exclusive jurisdiction over these transactions. Payment by credit card is at your own risk and you are responsible for ensuring compliance with local laws.

Paying by Internet Banking
POLi (Pay OnLine) allows you to pay directly from your bank account via your internet banking facility. By confirming this transaction, your payment will be made immediately from your account subject to sufficient funds being available. To use this facility you will need to be registered with your bank for internet banking and your internet banking details will be required.

What details do I need to provide?
Name
Your name (Given names and Surname) is important because we need to be able to identify you with your transaction.
For Medical Certificate application fees - If you are renewing and have changed your name since your last medical, please ensure that you take a copy of your official name change documentation, for example a marriage certificate to your Medical Examiner. Your Medical Examiner will need to sight this and provide a copy with the assessment documentation.
Nominated Email Address
We will send your payment confirmation (receipt) to your nominated email address. In order to view the payment receipt, you will need a pdf reader (what is a pdf reader?).

Note: If you do not find the payment confirmation email in your InBox, please check your Junk/Spam folder. Depending on your email setup/provider, the payment confirmation email may incorrectly be treated as spam due to the presence of attachments.
CAA Participant ID
If known, this is your unique CAA issued 5 digit identification number.
It is very important that you enter your CAA participant ID number correctly when prompted.
For Medical Certificate application fees - if this is your first application, your CAA Medical Examiner will apply for a CAA Participant ID on your behalf when you submit your Medical Certificate Application form.
Billing Name (optional)
You can optionally provide the billing (company) name if paying on behalf of a participant. If this is provided, the billing email address must also be provided.
Billing Email Address (optional)
You can optionally provide a billing email address if paying on behalf of a participant. A copy of the payment receipt will be sent to this email address. If this is provided, the billing name must also be provided.
Identifying a Medical Examiner
For medical certification, you will have the option of selecting a CAA Medical Examiner whose responsibility it is to conduct the examination and/or assessment.
Why is having a receipt number important?
For Medical Certificate application fees - having a receipt number is important because this number tells the Medical Examiner that you have paid your medical certificate application fee. The Medical Examiner is required to acknowledge that confirmation of payment has been made.
For other products - having a receipt number is important because you need to quote the receipt number when you submit your application.
About the Medical Examiners
Who and What are CAA Medical Examiners?
The CAA has a number of delegated and designated Medical Examiners located in New Zealand and internationally. These Medical Examiners are approved by the CAA to conduct examinations and assessments for the purposes of issuing a medical certificate.
Civil Aviation Rule Part 67 (CAR Part 67) describes the requirements for becoming a Medical Examiner. They include the following:
- Acceptable aviation medicine training
- Acceptable aviation regulatory medicine training
- Demonstration of relevant competencies
- Ability to communicate effectively in English
- Meeting the exposition requirements

There are different grades of Medical Examiner and they are as follows:
- Medical Examiner Grade 1 : Can examine and assess classes 1, 2 and 3 for the purposes of issuing a medical certificate.
